Telus recruits Leonard Nimoy to vet your Facebook status updates
Brought to you by Telus, What Would Leonard Nimoy Say (WWLNS) is a Facebook app, which allows you to run your status updates past the legendary sci-fi actor before slapping them up on Facebook. To use the app you must 'Like' it, and sacrifice your https connection if you happen to have it enabled, but that's the price you pay to have Spock proof read your inane musings.
Check out Telus on Facebook to take the app for a whirl, and jump on over to Engadget to see more Nimoy-Telus combinations.

Opera 11.10 gets HTML5 File API support, IMAP improvements

On the IMAP front, Opera now supports special folders like sent items, spam, and trash. It also better handles duplicate items in Gmail -- such as those which appear in all mail and under your custom labels.
Opera 11.10 now partially supports the HTML5 File API as well, which means your favorite Web apps (like Gmail) may soon begin adding Opera to the list of supported browsers.
You can download the latest Opera 11.10 snapshot for Windows, Mac, or Linux from the official release post.
Update: The Opera 11.10 RC is now available, as pointed out by SlashZaku in the comments. Thanks!

TUAW's Daily Mac App: Producteev
Task management is something most loathe but have to do to keep productive. Producteev, a previously web and iPhone app focused task management service has just launched a Mac app.
Producteev focuses on creating and managing tasks with the ability to connect those tasks with other people, other services and sync them to the web. You can create tasks in different categories, arrange them by due date, attach notes and files to them, and even comment on them.
You can set up alerts for deadlines and get notified through the app itself, Growl, the Menu bar or Dock icons, or even via email and Gcal with a little help from the web app. You can also apply customizable color coded labels to your tasks to help you differentiate them from one another, as well as "Star" them with a rating from one to five.
For an individual, Producteev could be a little over complicated for what you need unless you're a serious multi-level task manager. But for a team, Producteev allows you to share tasks, create and assign them to others (individuals and groups of people) and has the potential to make collaborative tasks just that little bit easier. Comments and file attachments allow adjustments and additions to a task, while everyone can monitor progress and pitch in if needed.
The Mac app portion of Producteev is free and so is an individual account with up to two users sharing workspaces. If you want more plans start at US$5 per month and reach up to $30 a month for unlimited users and 1.5 GB of file storage (with a two-week free trial).

Modern community building
The Stack Exchange network is already up to 51 sites on diverse topics, from math to cooking to science fiction. Each site is a community on its own, and each community has its own needs and values. Pouring a big fat algorithm in equal measures on top of 51 different groups of people does not always work the way you might hope it would work. Maybe that?s why the super-algorithm companies (like Google) tend to suck when they try to build social applications.
Our goal as a company is to incubate each of these 51 communities?to get them to critical mass. Critical mass is that magic moment when the community has enough activity that it grows by itself.
Building communities on the Internet is a new kind of profession. There are an awful lot of technology companies, founded by programmers, who think they are building communities on the Internet, but they?re really just building software and wondering why the community doesn?t magically show up.
Stack Exchange is trying really hard not to suck at building communities. I would say we?re earning a solid B so far, but we?re working really hard at learning... doing little experiments and getting early results. And one thing we noticed is that the pure, algorithmic approach can?t possibly work for different communities: you need a political/social approach. That is, you need smart human beings to use smart human judgment and cultivate each community individually.
Or, to use a metaphor that has been on my mind, you can?t use a robot to train a puppy. Every puppy is different.
With 51 communities and a new one opening almost every week, our small team of four community managers are doing a great job but they just don?t have the bandwidth to help cultivate every site. So we depend on the most active, enthusiastic users to promote their own communities and help them flourish. But these users are usually domain experts, not community organization experts.
So what I plan to do is build a team of super-evangelists here at Stack Exchange to serve as backup. Sort of like Lady Gaga?s backup dancers, but probably without as many muscles, they are not onstage to lead; they?re there to fill up the stage with more hotness than one person can provide.
This job will be sort of like being a community organizer at a non-profit. It combines elements of marketing, PR, and sales, but it?s really something different. I don?t expect that there are a lot of people out there who already kn0w how to do this well, so I?m going to train them, personally. Not that I know how to do this, but we?ll learn together. Every workday is going to start with a huddle at 9am and a plan for the day?s activities and an intensive six hours of work. Every workday is going to end with an hour of learning... reading Kawasaki and Godin and Ries and Trout, talking with invited experts, meeting with members of the community about what worked and what didn?t worked. Everyone who joins the program (and survives for a year) will come out with an almost supernatural ability to take a dead, lifeless site on the internet and make it into the hottest bar in town. That?s a skill worth learning for the 21st century.
If you or someone you know is enthusiastic, energetic, super-outgoing (a social connector), a great communicator (capable of sending 50 personal emails in an afternoon), with some training in psychology, political science, economics, philosophy, or the humanities in general, and you?re looking for an alternative to a dead-end mailroom job at a PR agency, this is a rare opportunity... please apply.

Broadband performance study finds huge regional disparities in US
Pando Networks has published the results of a study evaluating the Internet download performance of 4 million users across the country. The data offers some insight into regional bandwidth trends, highlighting significant disparity between US states in the average quality of Internet connectivity.
The study found that the Northeastern states and the West Coast had the highest average Internet speed. Rural regions in the Midwest tended to have the lowest average download performance—a finding consistent with previous reports of broadband availability challenges in rural communities. The highest-performing state was Rhode Island, with an average download speed of 894KBps. The lowest performer was Idaho with only 318KBps.
The scores from Pando's tests are quite different from the results of a smaller broadband performance study conducted by Communication Workers of America (CWA) in 2007. The CWA survey identified some similar regional trends, but found uniformly higher performance across the country. Both studies point to Rhode Island as the state with the fastest average broadband speed, for example, but CWA computed average broadband speed in the state at 5Mbps.
Pando's tests are based on real-world downloads made by users of the company's services, so it's not necessarily an accurate reflection of the user's actual bandwidth capacity. For example, users could be downloading other things in the background. Without more specific details about the methodology of both tests, it's difficult to speculate about the reason behind the vastly different scores.
In addition to comparing average speeds regionally, Pando also compared the difference in average performance between broadband providers. Comcast had the highest average download speed at 890KBps and Verizon came in second with 788KBps. A separate comparison of mobile broadband providers found that AT&T was the fastest at 416KBps and Verizon was the slowest of the major providers at 216KBps.
Accuracy of the specific numbers aside, the trends that emerge in all of these studies appear to show similar kinds of regional disparities. The bottom line is that not everyone in the United States has equal access to high-performance Internet connectivity.
