A mass grave, uncovered during construction at a German university, held the remains of about 60 people, with little evidence of their identities and how they ended up there. Now, almost four years after the discovery, a genetic analysis of bones from the site has revealed clues to a possible killer.

Scosche Industries produces a wide line of accessories for Apple products, ranging from iPad cases and flexible keyboards to screen cleaners and headphones. Now the company has developed and is selling the RDTX-PRO Radiation Detector and app for the iPhone and iPod touch.
Primarily designed for those who are affected by radiation from the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station in Japan, the US$329.99 device will be sold at Synexx in Tokyo beginning in September.
The RDTX-PRO can either be plugged into an iPhone or iPod touch via the dock connector or used as a standalone radiation alarm. When being used as a standalone alarm, the device runs on a single AA battery for up to 96 hours.
What's unique is that the device requires no calibration at all, but can still detect gamma radiation above 60keV with +/- 5 percent accuracy. The accompanying free radTEST app makes it easy to interpret the readings, showing simple green (safe), yellow (elevated), and red (dangerous) zones on a meter. A digital display is available for advanced users who wish to get exact radiation level readings, and the results can be shared via Facebook and Twitter or viewed on a Google Map.
Scosche is donating $10 of each sale to charities that are assisting people affected by the Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami, with a goal of $1 million within two years.

Ten days ago, HP announced that it was going to be liquidating its abruptly-discontinued TouchPad, the WebOS-powerediPad competitor that launched early this summer. When it first launched the device was going for $500; a later price drop to $400 didn't do much to help sales. But the liquidation sale sure did. The new pricetag: $99. All TouchPads available from both HP and retailers alike were sold out within a day or two. And since then, technophiles eager to get in on the deal have been refreshing their inboxes, Twitter feeds, and HP's websites to find out when the remainder of HP's unsold inventory would become available. HP just announced its answer: not for a few weeks. But there's some good news: instead of simply emptying out its warehouses, HP is actually going to manufacture a run of TouchPads to meet demand. Star Legends is the release title of Blackstar, an MMO whose origin I've recounted on the site here before. Spacetime Studios was a company formed from the ashes of an unreleased PC MMO that went on to make Pocket Legends, a full mobile MMO that started on iOS and then moved on to Android. Earlier this year, we heard that the company planned to use the built-up Blackstar concepts and work to create a sci-fi themed MMO for iOS, and Star Legends, released last week and now available for free on the App Store, is the product of that work.
Like Pocket Legends, the game is a full World of Warcraft-style MMO, with persistent characters, environments, and lots of instances and dungeons to fight through. Of course, it's all sci-fi based instead of fantasy, but Spacetime built up a really in-depth library for its planned title, and Star Legends presumably has made full use of it (with lots more content to come, no doubt). If you've never played a game like this, it can be a little confusing, but if you've ever jumped in to an MMO before, you'll be amazed to see what Spacetime has done with the genre on a mobile platform.
The game is microtransaction-based, but there's plenty to do for free right away. If you're a fan of Pocket Legends, or just want to see what kind of magic Spacetime has been working, definitely check it out.

Social application developer Seesmic is making a big move into the social enterprise and is debuting a dedicated Android app and iPad app for Salesforce's CRM product (Windows Phone 7 will also be added soon), called Seesmic CRM. The Android app will be launched tomorrow morning at Salesforce's annual conference, Dreamforce, and Seesmic will launch the iPad app in a few weeks. For background, Seesmic, which was founded by French entrepreneur Loic Le Meur, helps you monitor and track the social web. Seesmic's desktop, web, and mobile clients integrate with Twitter, Facebook and other social networks. The bonus of using an app like Seesmic is the ability to aggregate your streams from a number of social web services, like YouTube, Foursquare, Techmeme, LinkedIn and others. After building the semi-famous website that allowed iPhone users to jailbreak their devices by simply clicking a link, 19-year old hacker Nicholas Allegra, aka "comex," now has a job at Apple. A longtime member of the jailbreak community, Allegra announced late Thursday via Twitter that he accepted an internship with the iPhone maker.
Allegra made use of a flaw in iOS's handling of PDF files in order to create jailbreakme.com. The website made the process of jailbreaking an iPhone—necessary to install unofficial apps and hacks—as easy as visiting a webpage. Apple quickly patched the flaw about a week later, but Allegra used other flaws in later iterations of the site. The third version of the site used a similar PDF-handling flaw that could jailbreak the latest devices, including the iPad 2. Ironically, the jailbreak community also offered a patch for the flaw before Apple released its own nine days later.
Allegra, uncovered as a Brown University student by Forbes earlier this month, has been involved in the iPhone-hacking scene for some time. Last year he helped George "geohot" Hotz build a jailbreak tool called limera1n. He also co-developed a workaround for jailbroken iPhones that refused to load DRM-protected iBooks.
Forbes suggested that Allegra's iOS hacking skills were so good that Apple should offer the student an internship, and now the company has done just that.
"It's been really, really fun, but it's also been a while and I've been getting bored," Allegra wrote on Twitter. "So, the week after next I will be starting an internship with Apple."
This isn't the first time Apple has dipped into the jailbreak scene to hire an intern. MacRumors noted that Peter Hajas, developer of the jailbreak app MobileNotifier, was hired by Apple this past summer as an intern. While Apple likely considers jailbreak hackers somewhat of a nuisance, the steady stream of exploits they discover certainly keeps Apple's security team on its toes. iOS hacking looks as though it may be a straight path to a job with the company.

By using crowdsourcing for difficult tasks such as understanding speech or images, the software could enable smarter apps.
Enabling software to punt its toughest tasks to humans should result in smarter mobile apps and other programs, say the founders of the newly launched company MobileWorks. The startup makes it possible for programmers to build human intelligence into their software using crowdsourcing—the practice of parceling out relatively small parts of a larger problem to many different people over the Web.

The debate will rage for a long time over what piece of technology best encapsulates Steve Jobs' influence on our world: The iPhone? iPod? iMac? iPad? OS X and Aqua? But I'm going to argue for something a lot more low-tech: the turtleneck.
That, to me, captures the excitement Jobs both conveyed and sparked in others over his vision. It wasn't just another gadget or a feature or an online service; it was his ability to say This can help you change things.
I don't share the whole of that vision, but I've shared his excitement many, many times. (It takes no effort at all to conjure the memory of watching the simulcast from the Stevenote that announced iTunes and the larger digital hub vision... and my breathless call home to share the news with Alex.) And in the face of an often-jaded Silicon Valley, Jobs could consistently elicit gasps.
Every indication suggests Steve Jobs is now on a very difficult road. I wish him well. And I thank him for those moments of astonishment and wonder.
