Bad News For Google: Apple Leads A Group To Pay $4.5 Billion For Nortel Patents (AAPL, GOOG, RIMM, MSFT)

steve jobs

Apple led a consortium of tech companies to win a $4.5 billion bid for patents being sold by Nortel.

Microsoft, Research in Motion, Sony, AMC, and Ericcson were all part of the bidding group, who will get access to important mobile patents.

Who is missing from that list? Google, which started the bidding at $900 million.

This is really bad for Google, because it has the weakest patent portfolio of any major mobile company. That's why Microsoft has been able to sue Android partners and extract payments.
