Xtrafolio is a useful, yet a bit pricey, portfolio app

Continuing from Monday's review of Portfolio for iPad, today we're taking a look at Xtrafolio. Then, on Friday, we'll do a head-to-head comparison of the apps and whether the built-in Photos app is the best choice after all. We'll also summarize a few more options our readers gave us after Monday's review.

Interface

Xtrafolio starts out with a flowchart indicating how a portfolio is made and provides the very important shortcut of making sure to tap the bottom left and right corners at the same time to bring up settings. In the settings view, all the options are anchored in a menu on the left.

After the first time setting up the app, a logo page will be visible when it's launched. If you don't have a logo, you get a blank screen. To access your portfolio, single-tap the initial screen. The options are layered in different sections and go into a good bit of detail about what you can do with the app. Since the options are all in one location, it makes it easier to jump back and forth between different sections of the portfolio.

Gallery: Xtrafolio

Use

You can add media to Xtrafolio from the iPad, iTunes or via Dropbox. Xtrafolio will accept images, videos and PDFs. Instead of galleries with different portfolios, you can subdivide a single portfolio is subdivided into categories, then folders within that category. It's useful for when you specialize in different things. In my case, I set up Xtrafolio for my newspaper design work and comics writing. Within the categories, you can drag around files to customize the order. However, there is no tagging and no ability to edit the file name.

While there are a lot of customizations, it's fairy basic when it comes to presenting the portfolios. You can set up a sideshow with basic transition styles and enable high-resolution images. For some reason, song selection only works in portrait mode. Captions are available, but they're hard to read. One really nice feature is that you can enable a watermark so no one tries to rip off your work if you email it out. You can also set stuff back to default with a single tap if you're unhappy with your selections.

Xtrafolio has a single layer of passcode security, and this is to prevent people from accessing settings. You also can't enter settings while browsing a portfolio. You can add a basic resume and set it as your info page, which is a good way of showing a client right off the bat what you can do. There's a save stage option where Xtrafolio can return to the same position where you were if you close out of the app.

Xtrafolio is $16.99 in the App Store, which is a bit pricey for this category. With its feature set, I'd price it more around $14.99. Like Portfolio for iPad, it's well-recommended for the amount of options it has, even though it doesn't have quite as many importing options or tagging features.

Asymco graphs Apple's performance under Steve Jobs

Asymco always has great graphical analysis of Apple's performance, and the site's latest is no exception. Dirk Schmidt has analyzed Apple's market cap during the Steve Jobs era, and the graphs show just how dramatic Apple's turnaround was during Jobs's time as CEO.

At the beginning of Jobs's tenure, Apple's market cap was lower than every one of its competitors. But after an average 42 percent increase in market cap from 1997 to 2011, Apple became the most valuable publicly-traded company in the world.

Asymco's second graph, which shows Apple's of combined market cap among its competitors, shows how dramatic an effect Apple has had on the tech sector. Almost everyone is getting squeezed by Apple's ascendancy, but it seems Microsoft has been hit hardest of all; the company that Windows built has gone from over 50 percent of the market cap share down to measurably less than Apple's share.

If you're a graph junkie, definitely head over to Asymco and check out their analysis for yourself.

How Copyright Extension Is Harming Classical Music

With all the talk of the EU's decision to retroactively extend copyright from 50 to 70 years, despite no evidence that this is needed or useful, very little attention was paid to the massive harm this causes. Multiple studies showed that such an extension wouldn't provide much, if any, money to musicians, but most of the money would actually be diverted from artists to major record labels. And it gets even worse. Copycense points us to some reports about how copyright extension is guaranteeing that plenty of classical music won't be heard:
Last week, the EU ratified a new law extending copyright in music recordings to 70 years. That, argued Bob Stanley, was a bad thing for most musicians, and for music itself: much would now remain locked in the vaults of the big record companies. Stanley had been looking at the world of rock and pop, but PristineAudio, who runs a label specialising in out-of-copyright recordings, explained the ruling had far-reaching implications for classical music as well. "One major release of ours earlier this year illustrates well something this new act most certainly will kill off. A historic concert given in 1960 by British conductor Leopold Stokowski with the Philadelphia Orchestra … fell into the public domain in Europe [in 2011], and we were able to transcribe the conductor's own copies of the master tapes, prepared for him by the radio station, and release in the highest quality a concert that has long been of great interest to collectors.

"The irony of copyright law as it stands is that historic orchestral broadcasts are often almost impossible to reissue by anyone, until they pass into the public domain. The standard contract with an orchestra would allow for an initial broadcast and then a single repeat transmission. Thereafter, a new contract would need to be drawn up with the musicians for any further use of that recording. Trying today to track down the performers (or their estates) for a symphony orchestra that existed in 1960 is well-nigh impossible."
That's not the "irony" of copyright. It's the design of copyright, which has always been about granting monopolies to a few players, while limiting the market. It's a protectionist plan designed to protect a few industry leaders, rather than do what it says on the face of the box: promoting progress by increasing cultural output.

Is a 10-inch Kindle Fire coming? Amazon says 'stay tuned'

Is a 10-inch Amazon Kindle Fire coming?
We already knew to expect a 7-incher today, and that's exactly what we got in the Kindle Fire. We just asked Amazon Kindle vice president (and thinking man) Russ Grandinetti when we might expect a larger successor. With a smile, Russ said "Stay tuned," and left it at that. If you'll recall, RIM's Ryan Biden told us at a past Engadget Show that there was "no reason" the 7-inch BlackBerry PlayBook couldn't be shipped in a different size, and given recent rumors that both outfits were working with Quanta, it's not too tough to read betwixt the lines. We also asked about an international release of the Fire, knowing that many of you are lamenting its US-only release in November. We got the same response there. So, it's coming... the only question is when.

Skype update for iOS adds anti-shake, Bluetooth connectivity and ads for freeloaders

Skype's latest app upgrade brings a few substantial features, some good, one not so. Alongside a new anti-shake video call function (limited to the iPhone's back-facing camera), you can now pair Bluetooth headsets with the VoIP calling service, something apparently "long requested" from Skype fans. However, users have to fork out for credit to avoid seeing advertising that's also baked into the new version. The update's now up for grabs on both the iPhone and iPad, though there are reports of a few teething troubles, including missing credit and account details. We've also been experiencing issues, with the app unwilling to play nice with our Bluetooth headsets, though oddly, we can still hear the Skype call ring through. Hopefully we'll see another update that sorts this out soon -- till then, tap the link below for more details, or ogle a bit of smoothed out anti-shake action after the break.

Firefox 7 released, scores well in performance tests

Firefox 7 is out, and the release has prompted the folks at Lifehacker to run some performance tests on the current crop of browsers. The latest version of Firefox is pitted against Chrome 14, Internet Explorer 9, and Opera 11.51 in a battery of tests that probes everything from load times to memory usage. Somewhat surprisingly given its history, Firefox 7 has a smaller memory footprint than its competitors when multiple tabs are open.

That said, Firefox isn't the fastest kid on the block. Opera launches faster than any of the other browsers, and it's quicker to load a collection of nine tabs and crunch ...

First major Windows Phone update starts rolling out to (almost) everyone

The first major update to Windows Phone, version 7.5, codenamed "Mango," is finally nearing its consumer release, two months after being released to manufacturers and networks for testing. Microsoft is now delivering the update to every handset on every carrier in the US and the rest of the world, with a handful of exception. Handsets should start receiving update notifications at any time over the next few weeks.

The biggest exception is for Telefonica customers in Spain. Telefonica is still "testing" the update, with no indication of when this testing will be complete or what the cause of the delay is.

DirecTV Admits Almost No One Wants To Pay $30 To Watch A Movie At Home

Back in April, when DirecTV officially announced its plan to let people see movies for $30 at home, we were not alone in suggesting the price was ridiculously high, and were somewhat shocked to see theaters complaining that they'd never be able to compete. Looks like our thoughts on the price turned out to be exactly right. As a few people have sent in, DirecTV has admitted that there's been very little uptake of the $30 movies, and flat out admits that the price is too high:
The service is part of an attempt by studios to harness pay-TV as they seek new ways to sell movies and counter shrinking DVD sales. Few customers will purchase the premium rentals unless the quality of the movies improves and the price comes down, White said in an interview.

“They’re priced too high for consumers,” White said. “We didn’t choose that price, but that’s where the studios forced us to be.”
Of course, the studios forced that price because they're petrified of pissing off the theater owners (who were already pissed off), because the big studios still think that the "movie business" is defined solely and completely by how well a film does in the theaters on its opening weekend. The theater owners, at the same time, don't want to have to compete and actually improve the quality of their service -- so they whine and complain any time the studios do anything to make accessing content outside of the theaters any easier.

The end result, then, is just a big question of why anyone bothered at all with this plan. It made no sense for anyone involved. If you're going to offer video on demand to consumers, offer them a reasonable product at a reasonable price or don't bother.

Banshee music player now works in Windows, supports Amazon MP3 downloads

A few moments ago, version 2 of the Banshee music player for Linux was released, bringing with it a whole slew of new features, and the addition of an official -- but alpha-quality -- Windows build. The Mac OS X build of version 2 is due later today.

The most notable new feature is support for the Amazon MP3 store -- you can buy and download music from within Banshee -- but unfortunately it's only available in the Linux build at the moment (OS X and Windows support are planned, however). There have also been some significant improvements to artist, album, and queue interactions -- and yes, you can finally right click a track, album or artist and select 'play after' to insert it into the queue.

Beyond actual playback, the user interface has been tidied up -- it now looks a whole lot smarter -- and the Ubuntu One Music Store and SoundMenu extensions have been made official. For a complete list of changes, additions and bug fixes, check the change log.

When Windows support initially appeared in February, we found it rough around the edges and fraught with stability issues. With version 2, Banshee for Windows is still a bit unstable, but it's shaping up to be a good alternative to Winamp, iTunes, or whatever other music library manager you use. It's almost as attractive as its GNOMEish brother, too!

Black holes may shed light on dark matter

Researchers have simulated the effect of a primordial black hole ? an object hypothesized to make up dark matter ? passing through a star. This image illustrates the resulting vibration waves as a primordial black hole (white dots) passes through the center of a star. The different colors correspond to the density of the primordial black hole and strength of the vibration.Scientists may be able to spot evidence of elusive dark matter by watching for ripples on the surfaces of stars, a new study suggests.
